Free Civil Legal Assistance Gulfcoast Legal Services is a non-profit corporation providing free legal aid to income eligible residents of the greater Tampa Bay area. We have offices in Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota and Hillsborough Counties. We also provide immigration services to residents of Pasco County as well as in the other four counties where we have offices. We provide legal help with housing and mortgage foreclosure problems, family or domestic violence issues, immigration matters, SSI/disability and consumer matters. Gulfcoast Legal Services also has a special project to help seniors in Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota Counties. |

 GLS Family Law Team |
Each day GLS Family Law attorneys are ready to provide a critical lifeline for victims to handle the emergency needs of a family in crisis as a result of spousal abuse. GLS works with local women's shelters to assist clients who are in abusive situations obtain injunctions, child custody and financial support. Attorneys in the Family Law Unit at GLS help victims of domestic violence break the cycle of violence and move forward to a life free of violence and abuse. The program is funded in part by DOJ-LAV.

| 'Melania' fled from another state to Florida after her Husband held a gun to her head and threatened to kill her three children in front of her. the Husband was arrested, but released on Bond. GLS assisted Melania, who only speaks Spanish, in filing for divorce and a GLS Pro Bono attorney worked with the Attorney General in the state where the crime was committed to protect Melania when she returns to testify in that state. She now has the assurance that she will be safe and that her children will not be taken from her. |  |

Dave, a former musician, was homeless and living on the streets. After some rough years he sought help for depression and anxiety. He was admitted to transitional housing and referred to GLS for assistance with his SSI/disability. He applied in 2007 and was denied twice. In April of 2009 GLS represented Dave before an Administrative Law Judge. GLS had the decision be expedited as his time in transitional housing was almost up. At age 61 more time on the streets would be a blow to his mental health and his cleaned-up lifestyle. GLS won his case and helped Dave get an award of back benefits. Now Dave is doing well, living in his own apartment and getting the treatment and help he needs. |
